Help Me, I'm Lost!

Feeling lost?

Hogwarts Live started out small, but with time it has collected many new things to explore.

To a newcomer, it can be a little bit daunting.

To aid new players in their quests, the mighty Headmaster has summoned forth Eibwen, the imp. He's the little blue guy who told you to buy weapons when you first enrolled at Hogwarts, and helped you choose a specialty. But what happens next, where should you go, and what are all the doors, alleys, and shops for?

First of all: The game is about discovery and adventure. For this reason, you won't find all the answers to every little question. For most things, you should consult the FAQs, or just try them out yourself. Do not pester the staff with silly questions - ones you can ask others or figure out on your own - they will just grow enraged and smite you to their heart's content.

But we recognize that some things aren't at all obvious. So while we won't tell you what everything does, we've put together a list of things that you might want to try first, and that new players commonly ask us.

Please understand that these hints are spoilers. If you'd rather discover on your own, don't read any further.

What are all those things in my Vital Info, and Personal Info, I'm confused? A lot of it you don't need to worry about for the most part. The ones you should watch carefully are your hitpoints, and your experience. Ideally, you should keep that hitpoint bar green. And beware if it begins to turn yellow, or worse still, red. That tells you that death is near. Sometimes running would be smarter than risking death. Try and visit Hagrid if you are in a lot of pain.

Lower down is the experience bar, which starts all red, and will gradually fill up with white. Wait until it goes blue before you challenge your professor. If you can't see a blue bar, you aren't ready yet!

Looking for someone you know? The List of Students will tell you if your friend is online right now or not. If they are, the Owl Post is a good way to contact them.

What are gems for? Hang onto these and be careful how you spend them. There are some things that you can only obtain with gems.

Traveling can be dangerous. Make sure you've placed your valuables somewhere safe, and that you're feeling healthy before you set out for distant lands.

Feeling adventurous, looking for a pet, for something else? Inee's Pet Shoppe and Quality Quidditch are a couple places you might want to visit. These things are just some of the shops in different towns. Some of them give turns, charm or energy, and some take it away.

Where or when do I encounter Voldemort? They all ask this. You'll see him in the Forbidden Forest once you reach level 15, and not before then. You will need to be patient and build your strength while you wait.

If you have any questions which are not covered in the FAQ, you may wish to Petition for Help - keep in mind that the staff won't give you the answer if it will spoil the game for you or if you ask a vaque or stupid question. A stupid question is one covered in the FAQ, or one another player could easily answer for you. Do not anger the staffers with stupid questions unless you are prepared to suffer their vile temperaments.

Phoenixes - A guide to keeping them

So, you were wondering to yourself - "how do I come across a phoenix and when I do...how do I keep it?"

First off, phoenixes are creatures that are only available to players with 'good' alignments. Phoenixes will resurrect you occasionally upon death; this makes them a great asset. Not only can they resurrect you, but also they can fight along side you in the forest with their specialty powers.

To acquire a phoenix, obviously you must have a 'good' alignment. This means that your alignment must reach 50 or more to even have a chance of getting one. Some tips on becoming 'good' or raising your alignment is covered in the HogwartsLive FAQ, but will also be covered here.

  1. -Walk the firstyear girl, do not leave her.
  2. -Let Mrs. Norris be, do not kick her.
  3. -Always try to rescue the princess from the Sicilian. (The 'His side - Your side event)
  4. -Give your gold to Robin Hood, do not fight him.
  5. -Help the crew on the sinking boat, do not hinder them.
  6. -If you are Thirdyear or higher, you can resurrect another player for an increase in 'alignment'. This costs 10 gems but increases your alignment by 15.
  7. -Join the Order of the Phoenix. For each merit that you gain, your alignment is increased by 1. Merits are earned in the Forbidden Forest by slaying monsters. You can hold a total of 30 merits and can turn them in for little gifts. 7 merits will get you an additional specialty point to use, 14 merits will get you 1 gem and 25 merits will get you a temporary point of attack or defense. The attack and defense it non-stackable and will disappear after VEing.

Now that that is covered, I will present to you a mini-guide for keeping a phoenix. (Best used for those above thirdyear)

As most of you know by now, the Sicilian event can be a source of multiple negative effects. It does increase your alignment by 5 (decreases by 5 if you choose to do nothing) but can also kill you and/or steal all of your gold and forest fights. For those that don't wish to have this happen can resurrect a fellow player immediately upon VEing. This will give you a bit a leeway to leave the Sicilian event and keep the phoenix. If you haven't already, join the Order. This will help get the alignment increases needed to retain the creature. When you are full on merits, go turn them in so you can keep collecting them for more alignment.
Make sure to choose the "good" actions throughout each VE cycle, with an exception of Robin Hood. I suggest giving him your gold each time you encounter him UNTIL level 5 or 6. By that level you should have increased your alignment enough to be able to fight him without chance of losing your phoenix.
Pvp plays a major factor in alignment. In fact, it is risky to pvp while trying to retain your phoenix depending on the alignment of the person you pvp'd. If you pvp an 'evil' person, your alignment will increase by 10. However, if you pvp a 'good' person, your alignment will DECREASE by 10. This is what makes it risky, so pvp at your own risk if wanted.

If you do this, you shouldn't have too hard of a time keeping the pesky little creature. :)
Good luck!

~Kilian
